How Does the T2202 Work?
The T2202 Certificate breaks down your eligible tuition and enrolment details for tax purposes. It shows the tuition you paid and the number of months you were enrolled as a full-time or part-time student. You can use it to claim tuition tax credits on your taxes.

Eligibility Requirement:
Only tuition fees exceeding $100 per course qualify for the T2202 certificate. If your total annual tuition credit is less than $100, it will not qualify for the T2202 and may roll over to the next calendar year (if applicable). Please note that additional costs, such as textbooks, registration fees, and shipping, are not included in the eligible tuition amount.

Months of Enrolment:
The T2202 will also show how many months you were enrolled as a full-time or part-time student each year. This information is used to determine your education tax credit eligibility.

If You Paid Upfront for a Multi-Year Program:
Even if you pay all your tuition upfront, the total amount is divided across the calendar years your program spans.
For example:

  • Program Timeline: September 2024 to August 2026
  • Total Months of Enrolled: 24 months
    • 2024 T2202: Includes tuition for September–December (4 months).
    • 2025 T2202: Includes tuition for January–December (12 months).
    • 2026 T2202: Includes tuition for January–August (8 months).

Example Calculation
Let’s say:

  • Your program costs $2,000 and runs from September 2024 to August 2026.
  • You paid the full $2,000 upfront.
  • Here’s how it might look on your T2202:
    • 2024 (Year 1): $500 tuition (for September–December) and 4 months of full-time enrolment.
    • 2025 (Year 2): $1,000 tuition (for January–December) and 12 months of full-time enrolment.
    • 2026 (Year 3): $500 tuition (for January–August) and 8 months of full-time enrolment.
